Innovation capability There are twelve key aspects of any organisation to which innovation can be applied. We call these "innovation areas". Embed innovation in all of these, and everything you do will be innovative. The innovation areas fall naturally under four headings: The Ignite Innovation Healthcheck enables you to assess your organisation or group against great practice in these innovation areas. Leadership and management Develop understanding, ability and commitment to drive and support innovation activity and behaviour Strategic positioning and focus Establish where innovation should be focused and setting targets accordingly Communications and alignment Widespread understanding of the importance of innovation - why it is important; what it is trying to achieve Organisation Embed roles in the organisation that provide focus and stimulation for innovation People development Build developmental activities that enable staff to operate at full potential regarding innovation Skills Identify and develop skills and capability necessary to optimise innovation performance (e.g. project manager responsibility for solutioning) Collaboration Establish technological, behavioural and physical environment that enables shared thinking, resource and capability Empowerment Behaviour, processes and reward systems all create optimum encouragement and responsibility to apply and practice innovative thinking Orientation Continuous application of innovative thinking, techniques and disciplines to everything the business does Management process Effective, transparent and accessible innovation process, supported by other management processes Performance management Performance management processes and recognition and reward systems directly linked to innovation objectives Tools and techniques Availability of proven and constantly updated and replenished tools, techniques and approaches that support innovation activity. |
