Value from Technology

Securing lasting business benefit

Success in any business today depends on effective use of technology, and billions have been invested in technology in the last decade alone.  But how many organisations have achieved an acceptable level of benefit?  All too often, failure to set out a clear benefits case up-front, and implementations that get bogged down in customisation or data issues, mean that there is insufficient focus on how the organisation can get real value from the technology.  In the worst cases, as costs escalate, there is little appetite or resource to tackle the process, organisational and culture changes that are the missing link to real value and competitive advantage.

Ignite have been involved in many technology implementations across both public and private sectors and we have learnt two essential truths:
  • If you don’t have a relentless focus on benefits delivery from the start, then making up lost ground is exceedingly difficult.  Once the project is up and running, it has a life and a timeline of its own, and activities and effort not identified early on will find it hard to grab attention and resources
  • Whilst it is disappointing to find that a piece of new technology does not automatically deliver the expected benefits at go-live, success can be achieved post-implementation by adopting an inclusive and rigorous process to seek out and deliver value.

We call this post-implementation exercise ‘Value from Technology’.  We apply our proven approach to tackle issues and challenges and help the users of a recently implemented system to identify opportunities for further improvement.  We often find that people who have been using the system for a while can come up with a better set of benefits than was identified right at the start of the project.  We use bold and creative techniques to unlock users’ knowledge of business processes, their growing expertise in the technology itself and, through the use of insights from other environments, innovative ideas for managing processes and relationships in wholly new ways.

What’s more, having experienced the Ignite process, the ‘business as usual’ team is well equipped with the skills and confidence to look at their responsibilities in a more imaginative way, so that they continue to realise improvements in subsequent projects, both large and small.
